(Contributed by Fran West)Book 8 Page 156. Deed:Nothaniel (Nathaniel) Merritt (Meritt) to Jacob Powell (of Duplin County). Dated: 1 February 1787 (lIth year of Amer.Ind.). Trans.: 135 pounds for 280 acres "in the County of Duplin and part in Sampson County.On a branch of Rock Fish Beginning at the Run of Knowles marsh at the Old Causeway where the main Road Crossed said marsh." Deed mentions "the dividing line made for the purpose of dividing Between John Knowles and James Knowles," the "thick Branch," and the marsh.Land was "part of a survey of (1,000) Acres of land Conveyed by deed of sale from Caleb Mason to Robert Knowles deceased and then Conveyed by John Knowls to the said Nathaniel Meritt in the Year. 1778.
